The United Church of Zambia (UCZ) Luapula Presbytery is currently led by Rev. Bishop Darius Chitalu, with Rev. Robert Chasulwa serving as the Presbytery Secretary. The Presbytery has a deep historical foundation and plays a vital role in the life and mission of the UCZ, particularly in rural and peri-urban communities.
Luapula Presbytery traces its roots to the London Missionary Society (LMS) and was formally established in 1971 after being delinked from the then Northern Presbytery, following the growth of the Church and the need for more effective pastoral and administrative oversight. At the time of its establishment, the Presbytery was placed under its first Moderator, marking the beginning of an independent leadership structure. Since then, a number of Moderators and later Bishops have faithfully served the Presbytery, guiding it through different phases of growth, transition, and mission, up to the current leadership under Rev. Bishop Darius Chitalu.
Geographically, Luapula Presbytery extends beyond the administrative boundaries of Luapula Province, with parts of its jurisdiction located in Northern Province. The Presbytery covers a vast and diverse area, stretching from Chembe District on the banks of the Luapula River to the shores of Lake Mweru-Lupiya in Chienge District, a distance of approximately 450 kilometres. On the other axis, it stretches from Mukulu Bridge on the Luapula River to the Bangweulu wetlands, covering Samfya, Lunga and Chilubi areas.
The Presbytery is predominantly rural and peri-urban, with congregations serving fishing communities, farming areas, and remote settlements. This context presents both opportunities and challenges for mission, as the Church remains a key provider of spiritual leadership, social support, education, and health services in many underserved communities.
Guided by the mission and values of the United Church of Zambia, Luapula Presbytery continues to be committed to evangelism, discipleship, community development, and holistic ministry, faithfully witnessing to the Gospel of Jesus Christ across its wide and diverse landscape.
